    Remembering Hampsthwaite’s Blind Joiner - an article by Shaun WilsonLike the market town of Knaresborough, who had ‘Blind Jack’ – John Metcalf, the road builder of Yorkshire in the eighteenth century, the small rural village of Hampsthwaite had it’s blind hero also, almost a century later – Peter Barker who became known as ‘The Blind Joiner of Hampsthwaite.’ Though there are some similarities between John Metcalf and Peter Barker’s lives, these are purely co-incidental and each fulfilled a life, character and career in their own right.

    Arsenic Poisoning in Hampsthwaite - The Execution of Hannah Whitley In 1789, Hannah Whitley of Hampsthwaite used a pie as the delivery medium for a fatal dose of arsenic, with the poison concentrated in the crust. She claimed She had been coerced into the act of poisoning by her employer, a local linen weaver named Horseman, who was involved in an on-going feud with the intended victim.

  • Amy Woodforde-Finden

    A highly successful composer of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, Amy Woodforde-Finden, together with her husband and step-son, is laid to rest in the churchyard of St Thomas à Becket Parish Church. Inside the church there is an impressive marble monument of her, created by the renowned sculptor George Edward  Wade. UCI Road World Cycling Championships Come Through Hampsthwaite 2019

Tuesday 24th Sept. 2019 for High Street and Elton Lane :
  • No Parking: 23 Sep 22:00 - 24 Sep 18:30 - Road closed:  08:30 - 17:30
  • Mens U23 Individual Time Trial due to come through between 10:35 and 12:18
  • Women Elite Individual Time Trial due to come through between15:07 and 16:35

VE Day 75 - Stay at Home Street Party - 8th May 2020

Stay at Home Street Party - Decorate your House in Red, White & Blue and enjoy a picnic in your front Garden”.

The village was bedecked in red, white and blue bunting (see also a short video taken by resident Charles Charlesworth on the Hampsthwaite Memorial Hall FaceBook page)

Teas were prepared by the local coffee shop, Sophie's.

With sandwiches, sausage roll, cream scone and Victoria sponge. One recipient later declared it to be “As good as tea at the Ritz”. A VE day quiz was also distributed with each tea.

A group of volunteers distributed the teas, one came appropriately dressed in an outfit from the 1940s

SpringArt for CRUK in Hampsthwaite, 4/5 March 2016

Harrogate Friends of Cancer Research UK have organised an exhibition and sale of work by amateur and professional artists and photographers in Hampsthwaite Memorial Hall on 4th March from 7pm-9pm and 5th March from 10am-3pm. Please come along and support this event.

Free admission and light refreshments available. All welcome.

Christmas Tree Festival

St. Thomas a Becket Church, Hampsthwaite are holding a Christmas Tree Festival over the weekend of 15th – 17th December.

There will be a ‘Preview Evening & Concert ’ on Friday 15th with wine and canapes being served from 6.30 p.m and with a choral performance from Voces Seraphorum from 7.00 – 7.45 p.m. – tickets can be purchased from Hampsthwaite Post Office or you can buy them on the door (£7.00).

The church will be open from 10.00 – 16.00 on Saturday 16th December for you to come along and enjoy the Christmas Trees and there will be refreshments served throughout the day.
