WI: How it All Started
The WI movement was started in 1897 in Canada by Adelaide Hoodless from Stoney Creek, Ontario. Following the death of her young son, from drinking contaminated milk, (which she realised arose from her ignorance of hygiene and health care), she started classes in household management and domestic science so other mothers could avoid such a loss as hers. These classes were the beginning of a movement which quickly spread in Canada. In 1915, the first WI in the UK was established in North WalesWI: Where We Are Now
The WI is now the largest and most influential voluntary women's organisations in the UK, with over 7,000 WIs and almost a quarter of a million members. WI is an educational charity and a non-sectarian, non-party political and democratic organisation. Each WI belongs to a Federation, generally organised by county boundaries. Some larger counties may be divided into more than one, e.g. North Yorkshire West. and North Yorkshire East.
Hampsthwaite belongs to North Yorkshire West federation, and the office/ headquarters is at Ripon. The Federation is run by 9-12 members who are elected at the annual AGM. They organize Skill Training Courses, Workshops and Events which are open to all members. There is also a team of WI Advisers, specially trained to help and assist whenever necessary and offer guidance in the day to day running of WIs.
Each WI links with perhaps 6 or 8 others to form a GROUP. Hampsthwaite WI is one of eight WIs in the Nidd Valley Group. The Group committee meets quarterly and organises various annual events and activities; a Quiz, a Luncheon or Dinner, a Summer Walk, a Carol Service, a Rally, the AGM and the big event of the year the Ripley Show Competition
