  • Amy Woodforde-Finden

    A highly successful composer of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, Amy Woodforde-Finden, together with her husband and step-son, is laid to rest in the churchyard of St Thomas à Becket Parish Church. Inside the church there is an impressive marble monument of her, created by the renowned sculptor George Edward  Wade. It was unveiled in 1923 and a few years later, Finden Gardens in Hampsthwaite was named in her honour.[Click on title or image to link to articles]

We have no early photographs of this property but an engraving of about 1880 of the adjacent school does include a view of the house as it then was.

Enlarging the right side of the picture we can see some variation in its structure from the modern photograph above.

The entrance door is now enclosed by a porch and the window above it (if it ever existed?) has been removed.

We know from the Land Tax Valuation of 1910 that the property was then occupied by Margaret Ashton and this is confirmed by the census of 1911 where she is described as a widow aged 73 born in Dalwich, Peebles, Scotland.

The valuation document reveals that Mrs Ashton owned not only this property but also the adjacent house now called “Rose Lea” both with Copyhold title. The valuer described Mrs Ashton’s home as “Old Stone Built Cottage 1 Living room & 1 Bedroom” and valued it at £37 gross.
