  • Amy Woodforde-Finden

    A highly successful composer of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, Amy Woodforde-Finden, together with her husband and step-son, is laid to rest in the churchyard of St Thomas à Becket Parish Church. Inside the church there is an impressive marble monument of her, created by the renowned sculptor George Edward  Wade. It was unveiled in 1923 and a few years later, Finden Gardens in Hampsthwaite was named in her honour.[Click on title or image to link to articles]

Wheelhouse Name Meaning
English (Yorkshire): topographic or occupational name for someone living near or working at a wheelhouse from Middle English whele ‘wheel’ + hous ‘house’. According to Reaney the reference is often to a house near a dammed-up stream where a cutler ground his knives on a small water-wheel. The compound is not attested as a vocabulary word in this or any other sense before the 19th century although the surname William de Whelehous is found in 1379.

Eric was born in Mian Mir, Mussoorie, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India on 31st August 1875. He was the eldest son of Woodforde Woodforde-Finden, an Assistant Surgeon in the Bengal Medical Establishment, who at that time was married to Valence Aimee Robinson (1853-1927).
