Amy Woodforde-Finden
A highly successful composer of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, Amy Woodforde-Finden, together with her husband and step-son, is laid to rest in the churchyard of St Thomas à Becket Parish Church. Inside the church there is an impressive marble monument of her, created by the renowned sculptor George Edward Wade. It was unveiled in 1923 and a few years later, Finden Gardens in Hampsthwaite was named in her honour.[Click on title or image to link to articles]

The Parish Church of St Thomas a'Becket

Not surprisingly, the Parish Church is (in part at least) the oldest building still standing in the village. The tower dates back to pre-Reformation times although the remainder of the church was rebuilt at the start of the 20th century.

Coppings

This stone-built bungalow was, like its neighbours, formed in or about 1974 from redundant farm buildings belonging to Village Farm.

An early photograph of the old Vicarage gives us a glimpse of Church Lane and the barn from which Coppings was formed.

Demolished cottages at corner of Birstwith Road and Village Green

In this plan showing the junction of the Birstwith Road with the village green can be seen the outline of two cottages which stood there before (in the 1930's) they were demolished to enable the widening of the road junction.
