The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) are supporting the Plunkett Foundation Call to Action promoting the positive role parishes have to play in the Rural Co-operatives’ Programme.

Further to this NALC and Plunkett have asked us to send our member councils and parish meetings the attached flyer which summarises the benefits of setting up a community co-operative, the potential for them to address the challenges local communities are facing and the fully-funded support available from Plunkett.  Local councils have a hugely vital role as local enablers in largely rural areas to help establish such community co-operatives – at a time when arguably the creation of such vital building blocks as key units of local rural economic development are needed now more than ever.

Plunkett is a national charity that helps communities across the UK to set up and run community co-operatives; enterprises that are owned and run democratically by large numbers of people in their community – so, working in partnership with NALC, it is well placed to help parishes in the creation of such enterprise models.  Plunkett’s 2015-17 strategy aims to build on its achievements to date, and inspire an even larger movement of people who solve their challenges by running community co-operatives.
